Galvanising
Corrosion is the destructive attack upon metal by agents such as rain, polluted air and seawater. The rusting of iron provides the best known example of corrosion.
Galvanising, in essence, is the application of pure zinc or zinc aluminium coatings to the iron works. The choice of coating is made according to the environmental conditions the metal would normally be exposed to. The zinc or alloy provides an active cathodic protection to the metal upon which it lies. Thus, basically, the zinc coating corrodes in preference to the iron. This is due to small positive electrical currents being transferred from the iron to the milder metal - zinc. The system is often related to as sacrificial protection and is considered to be the most cost-effective systems to adopt largely due to its long life span.
The purity of zinc or alloys used ensure longevity to the protective layer by offering better resistance to the corrosion agents. One may further protect the metalwork by various other protective coatings such as paint, sealers etc.
